The Western Cape’s tourism stakeholders are more determined than ever to get the famous Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe back up and running after its closure last year.
Western Cape Minister for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, has stated his dismay at the train remaining idle over the past few months after the expiry of its licence to transport passengers and has taken on the task of re-instating its services. Although the line requires large amounts of repair, Winde has proposed to national government that the train and the line it runs on be turned over to the provincial government for it to be put out to tender.
The process has, however, been slowed with the replacement of the Public Enterprises Minister. The new minister, Malusi Gigaba, has been requested to attend a meeting with Winde to discuss the transfer of the Choo-Tjoe.
